PS5 or Xbox with no picture, or not reading discs? What's wrong and how it's fixed.

Two console problems come across our bench more than any others: a console that powers on but shows no picture, and one that won't read or eject discs. Both sound serious. Both are usually repairable locally, without shipping the console anywhere.

The short version: swap the HDMI cable and TV input first; if there's still no picture, the HDMI port is the usual cause. For disc problems, a clean disc and a restart come first, then the drive itself.

Start a repair

No picture: check the easy things first

Try a different HDMI cable and a different TV input, or another TV.
Hold the power button until the second beep (PS5) to start in safe mode with low resolution.
If the console's light is on but nothing reaches any screen, the fault is almost always in the console's HDMI port.

Why HDMI ports fail

The HDMI port is soldered directly to the board. A cable pulled at an angle or a console moved while plugged in can bend the pins or crack the solder joints. You'll often see a slightly bent or loose port. The repair is board-level: the damaged port is removed and a new one soldered in, then the console is tested on a screen before it goes back to you.

Won't read, eject or keeps spitting out discs

Start with a clean disc you know works and a full restart. If the drive grinds, clicks, won't accept discs or ejects them by itself, the optical drive is worn or misaligned. We realign or replace the drive; on the PS5 a replacement drive has to be paired to your console, which we do on the bench.

Should you ship it away instead?

If a different cable, TV input and safe mode don't help, the HDMI port is the most likely cause. It's a board-level repair we do locally.

Usually a worn or misaligned optical drive, sometimes a stuck eject sensor. We diagnose it free and realign or replace the drive.
